“The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.”
— Genesis 3:21

This moment marks the very first shedding of blood in the historical narrative of the Scripture. In that pivotal moment, humanity made the deliberate choice to disobey, breaking the sacred bond that once defined our relationship with our divine Creator.
Yet despite our choice to turn away, God, in His infinite mercy and grace, did not rebuke us or cast us aside. Instead, He responded with compassion. In our brokenness, He clothed us, providing what we could not provide for ourselves — a covering.
He clothed Adam and Eve, an act that revealed His unwavering care for humanity even in the face of our transgression. That covering came at a cost: the sacrifice of something He Himself had lovingly created. In that moment, God showed that even after the fall, His response to our failure would not be abandonment, but sacrificial love.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? This moment powerfully foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice that would one day unfold in the New Testament, where the weight of our redemption would rest upon the shoulders of another — an unparalleled act of love meant to fully reconcile humanity with the Divine.
The echoes of this first shedding of blood ripple throughout the Scripture, reminding us of the extraordinary lengths love is willing to go in order to restore what was lost and redeem what was broken.
As a tax collector, I often faced the disdain of my own community. Yet despite my shortcomings, He still clothed me.
I have made grave mistakes — even taking lives — and still, He clothed me, wrapping me in His love and giving me a place to belong.
I have strayed from the path many times, committing acts that shattered trust, yet He clothed me still, covering me with His compassion.
I have wrestled with addictions, sought escape in the wrong places, and known the weight of being an outcast. But no matter how far I have wandered, He continues to clothe me in dignity, mercy, and hope.
And the beautiful truth remains: His sacrifice does not end. Again and again, He continues to reach out to each of us, offering redemption, compassion, and the invitation to return to Him, no matter our past.
His mercy is boundless, and through His unwavering love we are reminded that no matter how far we may wander, we are never beyond His reach. In our brokenness, in our shame, and even in the moments we feel most unworthy — He still clothes us.
This verse led me to reflect on my own life. How often have I left myself exposed, vulnerable in my sin? Yet Christ did not leave me that way. Instead, time and time again, He clothed me. Not with the same stained garments I once wore, but with new ones.
This truth fills my heart with deep gratitude for His endless compassion and the love He continues to pour over me.
When you look back at your life, how has God clothed you with His mercy?
